The Pantanal

The Pantanal is a huge wetland area, half the size of France. It is rich in wildlife, so we were looking forward to it! Unfortunately, our bad luck with the weather continued, and temperatures were extremely low compared to the all-year-round average of 30-40 degrees. This meant not only that the wildlife was hiding, and therefore difficult to spot, but also that our sleeping hammocks in a room without proper windows were very very very cold. Needless to say, our sleep was pretty poor!

Luckily, alongside some tasty food, we had a guide with a keen eye, who managed to spot a lot of the main birds and animals of the area. We saw wild toucans, macaws, capybara, monkeys and caiman. Our guide took us on a muddy trek through marshes, horse riding, and on a night trek. We also had an unsuccessful, but fun, attempt at piranha fishing!
