Colonia, Uruguay
The benefit of not planning too far ahead is that when someone invites you on a random day trip to Uruguay, you say “yes!” That is how we ended up in Colonia..
Colonia is a small town which is steeped in history. The Spanish, Portuguese and British fought over it due to its vital position on the Rio de la Plata. The centre is very pretty, with cobbled streets leading towards the sea, and countless historic buildings. We also explored further afield by driving a golf buggy to the beaches, shipwreck museum and deserted bullring. our visit was completed by a soft sunset and a plate of egg, meat and chips (apparently the national dish).

The town is full of old cars, adding to its charm
