The Uyuni Salt Flats

After a bumpy, 10 hour coach trip from La Paz, we made it to Uyuni. It is a dusty, drab town on the outskirts of the huge Salt Flats. We then spent the following 3 days in 4x4s, making our way across the inhospitable landscape to see the sights. We spent a night in a salt hotel and another in a basic hostel lodge. It was so cold, the high altitude air was thin, the food was poor and the ride was uncomfortable… But it was worth it.

We saw:
– wide open salt flats
– a salt ‘factory’
– a cactus ‘island’ with 10m high cacti
– geysers
– lakes filled with flamingos
– an old train cemetery
