Northern Queensland and The Great Barrier Reef

We flew up to the party town of Cairns with the plan of spending 2 two weeks working our way around and down to Brisbane. It doesn’t look far on a map, but it really is! At last we had consistent hot days, and nights so warm we needed fans and AC. Woop woop!

The first journey for our white Corolla was a drive up the coast to Port Douglas. It was considerably more classy than Cairns here, and we enjoyed then relaxed nature of the town. It was from here that we took a trip to the natural wonder of the world – The Great Barrier Reef!

We saw (to name a few): white tipped reef sharks, angel fish, anemone fish, giant clams, barracuda, black velvet sea cucumbers and parrot fish. The major difference to other reefs we’ve visited was the variety and abundance of coral. If the reef is in general decline, there was no signs of it here, it was like another world 🙂

The other natural wonder in this area is the tropical wetlands, starting below Cairns and stretchibg hundreds of kilometres beyond Port Douglas. We had a good look around in Mossman Gorge. The area is supposedly home to 90% of indigenous creatures, our best spot was a Bush Turkey!
