Koh Rong
This is largest island off of the Cambodian coastline. All of the islands are said to be not overly developed, but we read many articles stating that the French & Russians are eager to invest in them and create Thai style mega resorts. We could see why… after enduring a traumatic 3 hour slow boat ride, the island was stunning. No cars, no mopeds, no ‘tuk tuk sir lady tuk tuk?’ shouts, just a crescent beach with loungy bars, palm trees, bamboo bungalows and turquoise warm waters.
We stayed in an overpriced brand new beach front bungalow. Although open to the wildlife (you could see through the slats in all 6 sides of the bedroom!) It was a really remote, idyllic location with a good level of comfort, and a view of the sea from our bed. This is the kind of place travellers day dream about when not travelling!
The only activity we undertook on our two days on the island was to walk across the island to an even more remote, exclusive beach. This one was pretty special… squeaky white sand, snorkelling from the beach and only about 20 people in sight on a 7km stretch. It was one of the best we have EVER been to, up there with Australia’s Whitehaven beach and Brazil’s Ilha Grande beach, and who has heard of a Cambodian beach before?? Not us!
