Koh Ta Kiev
After a much better return journey from the far away island of Koh Rong, we tracked down a private boat to take us straight to island number 2 where would spend 3 nights, including New Years Eve 2013/14.
The ‘Ten103’ resort was made up of tree houses, hammocks and dorm beds. We got an unexpected upgrade from dorm bed to treehouse. This place was special. At high tide, the treehouse overhung the clear waters gently lapping beneath us. At low tide, you could sit and watch crabs cling to the limestone rocks and watch schools of fish meandering for food morsels.
This raw remoteness came with a price, and that was pretty awful shared facilities. The showers were dunk buckets into very dirty looking water and the toilets were holes in the ground, and just when Olly needed some comfort the most: the anti-malaria tablets were causing unwanted side effects!
The island had no roads, no power and all food was boat-imported. Despite this, the resort created impressively good meals! Apart from eating our way through the menu, we lazed on the beach and occasionally went off snorkelling. There was a little coral and only a few fish varieties but Olly spotted a puffer fish and was pretty happy!
New years eve was tame but we were fully aware that that was to be expected from this location. We just felt incredably lucky to be able to be somewhere like this, even if it turns out to be the only time in our lifetimes.
After 3 nights and days on the island we were just about ready to return to the much more developed seaside town of Sihanoukville for a proper wash! Despite the development, it did also have a few great beaches and many large bars. The town was a bit grey and average and not for the first time in Cambodia we were made to feel uncomfortable by the amount of children working the beaches at all times of the day. We picked up our Vietnam visas and looked forward to the next part of the journey…
